What's in Your Kit? The Cairn Crew unboxes their Kitted gear.

October 01, 2019 | 18 comments

This past spring, the team at Cairn was thrilled to launch a new way for our community to explore and discover new brands, activities, and outdoor inspiration - Kitted by Cairn. The Kitted program is a personalized, try-before-you-buy retail experience. Kitted members can select up to five items from their custom Kit Shop and try items out before committing to a purchase. The program is ideal for those that want to try a new activity, upgrade their current gear, or test out the latest and greatest outdoor products before investing in them.

The entire Cairn Crew has been personally testing the Kitted program themselves. Over the coming weeks, members of the Crew will share their Kits and how they've been putting their new gear and apparel to use.

Intrigued? Learn more about our Kitted by Cairn beta program and secure your spot so that we can start customizing a Kit Shop for you. Together, we'll create a Kit that takes you new places!

Cairn Crew Member:

Rob, Co-Founder and Co-CEO

Activity selected:

Hiking and Car Camping
(Rob changed up his activity preference on each Kit Cycle).

Kit items kept:

Astral Hemp Loyak
Mammut Lithia Speed Backpack
Kammok Roo Double

How I put my Kit to use:

"In July Betsey (wife), Kennedy (daughter), and I hiked into Lucky Lake and took a dip. Kennedy's first mountain lake swim! It was an idyllic Saturday activity in the Cascades.

My Hemp Loyaks from Astral were comfortable for the hike and perfect for the rocky/muddy lake bottom on the swim. Betsey loved the Mammut Lithia Speed backpack, it was the right size for Kennedy's supplies and snacks/water for our hike. The Kammok Roo Double provided the perfect way to relax lakeside before hiking back to our car."

Activity selected:

Car Camping

Kit items kept:

Craft Sportswear Women's Grid Turtleneck
Black Diamond Spot 325 Headlamp
MSR Pocket Rocket
Toad&Co Swifty Breath Tee
Hydro Flask 21 oz. Standard Mouth

How I put my Kit to use FOR REAL:

"My Kits have been off-the-wall amaz-za-zaing. I'm a #vanlifer so my mornings, nights, and weekends are spent in the woods and there is nothing worse than gear breaking down on you when you're away from civilization with minimal backup options. Kitted gives me that chance to really be sure gear lives up to its online reviews."

Hiking Three Sisters

Cairn Crew Member:

Matt, Accountant and Financial Analyst

Activity selected:

Hiking

Kit items kept:

Marmot Vance SS
Mammut Hiking Pants RG

How I put my Kit to use:

"I climbed the Grand Teton in the Mammut Hiking Pants and they were great - light with a good stretch but kept the wind off. The Vance SS has been great on all kinds of hikes, including an attempt at all of the Three Sisters in a day (only made it up two of them). Kitted has been great for trying on a couple of shirts to find the one with the fit I wanted or seeing a selection of outdoor pants narrowed down to the ones specific to hiking."

Activity selected:

Trail Running

Kit items kept:

Osprey Dyna 1.5 Hydration Vest (with Reservoir)
Garmin Forerunner 35
Craft Essential 5" Shorts
Scarpa Spin Ultra

How I put my Kit to use:

"I'm training for my first ultramarathon - 50k on trail. My Kit helped me find gear that would carry me through a distance and terrain that's new to me. I have used all of these items a minimum of once a week since I received them."

I paid to try out kitted, but I haven’t been notified to pick anything out to try? I’m new, so maybe I just haven’t gotten the email to do so yet, but checked my account and there isn’t anything there either. I signed up at the beginning of the month, and nothing so far. Thanks!

Hi Tammy,

We’ll email you directly to make sure you’re up to speed on next steps with your account, but if you paid the $25 curation fee in the past and never selected items to be shipped to you, you still have a $25 credit in your account that can be applied to a future Kit Cycle. We’ll be sending an email out to all of our active Kitted members in the next couple of days with timing of the next Kit Cycle and the activity options that will be available.

Thanks for being a part of Kitted!

Hi Dave,
We’ll reach out directly via email to figure out what’s going on with your account. We’ve had hundreds of members go through three cycles of Kitted successfully, so something’s definitely not right. We’ll make sure to touch base and everything rectified for you!

I signed up the first go round. (Carin took $25) I picked items from a list a few weeks later. I have since not heard anything or ever received anything to try…I’m not sure it’s even a real thing.. maybe just a way to squeeze $25 out of people that already give them money every month.

This presently has nothing to do with this Kitted box, however , what happens to the few I paid for a previous kitted box but missed the picking of said items in a box?
Thank you
